We are in the middle of a study at Victory Church titled, "How to Listen to God." This past Sunday I shared a lesson titled, "Are You Listening?"
We have already discerened that God is speaking to us, but the problem is that we are so busy listening to everything else that we have a difficult time hearing the Voice of God. There is a beautiful passage of Scripture in I Samuel 3:4-10 where God was speaking to Samuel.
Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, "Here I am." And he ran to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." But Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down." So he went and lay down. Again the Lord called, "Samuel!" And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." "My son," Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down." Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. The Lord called Samuel a third time, and Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, "Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" Then Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."
Isn't that the most beautiful way to answer the Lord? "Speak, for your servant is listening." Eli taught Samuel how to listen to God, and if we are going to be men and women of God today, we too, must learn how to listen to God. Here are a number of ways that will assist us in hearing what the Lord is speaking to us.
1. We need to listen EXPECTANTLY (Jeremiah 33:3; I Kings 18:35)
2. We need to listen DEPENDENTLY (I Corinthians 2:7-12; John 16:7, 13)
3. We need to listen PATIENTLY (James 4:7-8)
4. We need to listen ACTIVELY (Colossians 3:16)
5. We need to listen CONFIDENTLY (Matthew 7:11)
6. We need to listen QUIETLY (Psalm 46:10; 62:5)
7. We need to listen OPENLY (2 Timothy 3:16)
8. We need to listen ATTENTIVELY
9. We need to listen CAREFULLY (Hebrews 4:12)
10. We need to listen SUBMISSIVELY (Matthew 26:39)
11. We need to listen GRATEFULLY (Philippians 4:6-7)
12. We need to listen REVERENTLY
